Did I ever tell you the story about the Captain I knew in the City of Newark who would never help his crew load the hose back onto their pumper? It did not matter if the crew was full or riding short. This bum would sit in the cab of the pumper smoking a cigarette while his people worked to reload the hose. What a terrible example of first-line supervisions and leadership. But do not think that I am limiting my comments solely to the realm of the first line supervisor.

It is with a great deal of interest that I read about the plans by fire departments across the country to close stations, create part-time fire stations and lay off people. I guess we are once again at that stage of government operations where the health and safety of the public is no longer of any concern. The hue and cry for fiscal reform always tends to drown out the reason needed to properly address these issues.

The personality profile of the emergency service worker is one that is action oriented
tainted with the concept of control. It is not hard to figure out what drives the average
emergency service worker. It is the adrenaline rush that is produced from responding to a
working structure fire that has been upgraded by the first arriving unit to a second alarm
assignment to a gunshot wound to the chest that requires the medical responder to

Over the last year I am constantly struck by the lack of of understanding between two simple terms: "marketing and sales." This has everything to do with the way many of us go about gaining financial support, especially in the very difficult economic conditions we all face. Because the history of the US Fire Service is based on suppression, we sometimes have a reaction mentality when faced with a problem.  But even when this happens on the fireground, we do consistently plan in adance.

Riding With Captain Dave                            July 7, 2010    Firefighters need to be trained to recognize that the "all purpose" 1-3/4" handline may not be the best choice for the initial attack handline.   Sizing the initial attack hose line
